64 Essex Road is a four storey brick building, built in the 1930s as office accommodation over a banking/retail unit at ground and basement levels. The building is soundly constructed and has some style (just a whiff of Deco). The shop unit frontage was originally set into a Portland Stone surround which also enclosed the office entrance, unifying the ground floor presentation of the building. This frontage had suffered several inappropriate additions with successive tenancies. Subsequent to a comprehensive functional review the following work was carried out:  the front elevation brickwork was repaired and illuminated; the steel windows were replaced with matching frames to current performance standards.
